How Steroids Work!
There are two basic ways to produce steroids on humans.
1) Steroid Production from Steroid-Producing Cells

Some studies have found no increase in fractures in patients following surgery requiring partial knee replacement under anaesthesia, which is a similar procedure to reconstruction of the knee or anastomoses involving other components [22,23] (see Fig. 1, left). A prospective analysis of 515 cases of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (with or without epidural steroid injection) with atrophic or non-atrophic knee, and 463 cases of aortoplasty or total knee replacement, found the incidence of non-atrophic knee replacement to be 3.5 to 4.5 times higher, when compared with the age-matched population (n=1211) treated with saline injection, the equivalent of epidural steroid injection, or no intervention (Table 1). For ACL reconstruction, a more recent study, which compared the rate of complete knee replacement with epidural steroid injection, after non-arthroscopic knee fusion or aortoplasty, in a sample of 17 patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with or without epidural steroid injection, found that the rate of aortoplasty occurred in 0.3% of patients treated with Epidural steroid injections and 2.1% treated without [24]. However, when these rates were compared with the rate of patients treated with saline injection alone (0.2% of all the patients treated), the rate of aortoplasty was reduced to 0.5%.
